Chapter 13: Detention with Dolores
Hermione starts knitting clothes to free the house-elves in the castle. The students have their first Care of Magical Creatures class with Professor Grubbly-Plank. She won’t answer questions about Hagrid. The students learn about bowtruckles.
Going to detention, Harry has to miss the Quidditch try-outs. His detention is to write "I must not tell lies" over and over. The magical pen makes the phrase be carved into the back of his hand, which starts bleeding. He has a whole week of that to look forward to. Ron is being evasive about where he is going at nights. It turns out he is trying out for the Quidditch team - and he gets the position of keeper.
Question:
How do you feel about the punishment of being made to do lines with "her special quill"? Why didn't Harry complain about the quill and the pain?
Re: Chapter 13: Detention with Dolores
It's bad enough to do lines (trust me it's based on experience hehe) but having to use the special quill is much worst. I imagine it's like getting paper cut over and over again. It's child abuse! Harry must have thought Umbridge would love to see him in pain and he's not giving in; neither was he "going to give her the satisfaction of hearing him complain about it". Harry must have also thought that complaining was a sign of weakness, and he definitely wasn't going to show that to Umbridge. Furthermore, he didn't want to let Ron and Hermione or Dumbledore to worry about him.

Re: Chapter 13: Detention with Dolores
Th punishment is way over the top. It's one thing to discipline a student but to inflict pain on them is a big no-no in my book.
I guess Harry did not say anything about this to Prof. Dumbledore or McGonagall because he was trying not to play the favorite student card or something. He knows that if the two professors learn of his punishment, they would automatically rally behind him and demand that Umbridge make amends. Not only will that gain further anger from Umbridge, but it will not look good with the other students as well. Maybe it was also his way of defying Umbridge. No matter how much pain or hardship she throws his way, he will not let her break him.

- Losing first is one of the best ways to get everyone wants which is the essence of winning though it's really disappointing for Harry to experience child abuses. We know that Dolores Umbridge is known for being a part of those Death Eaters. Maybe that's one of her strategies to ruin the prophecy of "The Chosen One". She used her position to abuse people she wants to like Harry Potter.

It's not fair. Harry shouldn't be treated for saying lies because what he says is actually the truth. the ministry ignores this kind of warnings because they want to cause MEDIA BLACKOUT to the wizarding world so they published nasty things about dumbledore and harry.
i think why harry did not complain about the quill and the pain is because, if he will say that the quill is ineligible for writing, he could lose points for his house and also he could be suspected to have this dreams so he didn't complain... one more thing is that dumbledore is busy with the matters with the order now that the death eaters are on the loose.
