Harry discovers he is being tried before the full Wizengamot, chaired by Cornelius Fudge. Dumbledore appears as a witness for the defense. Fudge tries to dismiss Harry’s claims and those of his witnesses. He also suggests to Dumbledore that laws can be changed so that the Ministry would have more control of Hogwarts and Dumbledore. Eventually Harry is cleared of charges.

Question:

1) Harry is cleared of all charges and is happy that Dumbledore appears to speak on his behalf. Why do you think Fudge want Harry to be voted guilty, even if he is not?

Vindication on the part of the Minister. If Harry is found guilty, then everyone will easily believe what Fudge and the entire Ministry have been doing the entire summer, that is, discrediting Harry Potter. And if Harry is found guilty, that's one less wizard to worry about; one less wizard who loves spreading the "rumor" that the Dark Lord is back. We know how Fudge acts like a frightened ostrich. By burying his head underneath the sand he can pretend for all the world that everything is dandy when it is not. A guilty verdict will validate this ostrich/Fudge-ian act.

Fudge is one of those officials who doesn't want any trouble while he's "reigning." It reflects his way of handling things if problems like the one that Harry Potter is involved in and thus, making him an unreliable and inconceivable leader. Nobody wants to be under such a person and Fudge doesn't want to be out of hid position. So yeah, Fudge wanted Harry to be guilty to clear his name of being an inconceivable leader and making it clear to the Wizarding World that he can take any challenges with ease. ><

i think the minister wants harry guilty because if harry was sent to muggle world and did not return to the wizarding world, there will be no one who will spread the news that the dark lord is back. this moment that harry became unconnected will cause MEDIA BLACKOUT to the wizarding world because there will be no truth about the dark lord is back.
